Emulating a Professional Photographer

I think this is my most successful image because I effectively invoke photographer Joel Meyerowitz’ style of photography here. When I saw Meyerowitz’ photograph on the right, my mind instantly went to the steam in front of Pearson Hall on campus. I wanted to try to capture someone walking through it in a similar fashion to Meyerowitz, with bright lighting and a sort of anonymity given to the subject walking by.
Capturing this image definitely took a lot of tries. I had to reposition myself often and experiment with different framing and angles. I’m also not used very used to street photography – most of my other photographs I’ve taken for the course have been planned, with any people I photograph being individuals I’ve asked to pose! As such, trying to capture that perfect moment was definitely the most challenging aspect of this assignment.
In the future, I’ll definitely be more careful with my camera settings in street photography contexts. Street photography is definitely spur–of-the-moment, and the perfect shot could arise at any time. Just the same, I was a little disappointed in the overall image quality of this photo – it’s definitely a bit overexposed – and next time I’ll take an extra minute or two to make sure all my settings are in order.

"Hi Nikki! I absolutely love this photograph. The lighting is great and the focus is sharp, and you effectively used the Rule of Thirds to capture your subject matter in a way that’s pleasing to the eye. I know you pointed out that you wish you were able to better emulate Meyerowitz’ ability to capture emotion, but I’d definitely say you were successful in that regard with this image. I like how two of your subjects are clearly interested in the nearby dog, with the dog’s owner smiling slightly, while the other individual looks off into the distance – it makes me wonder she’s thinking about."
